Board of Directors

To train up tomorrow’s difference makers, there must be a core leadership who are passionate about Memphis and unwavering in the vision that leadership works.

We’ve gathered a group of highly successful men and women to create the LeadershipWorks Board of Directors, and as an organization under the leadership of this accomplished group of executives and influential Memphians, we’re committed to making our city even greater.

Brian Smith  President

Sr Vice President, Leasing, Poag Shopping Centers

Brian was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, and is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. He and his family moved to Memphis 13 years ago so Brian could join Poag Shopping Centers  a nationally recognized company which focuses on retail, with lifestyle retailers as the basis of its developments. He is also a board member for Street 2 Street ministry in New York.

Brian understands the power of mentorship as his own life was impacted when one man committed to mentoring him. Since then, he has committed to mentor other men, and has seen the positive power of mentorship through his own children. It is Brian’s full belief that the vision and mission of LeadershipWorks can change lives and families, and can raise up leaders to lead Memphis into a great future.

Chris Conlee  Vice President

Lead Pastor, Highpoint Church

Chris was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Communications and, putting his competitive foot forward, decided to pursue a career playing golf. However, things took a turn in 2000 when Chris felt God pulling him into full-time ministry, and that’s where he’s been ever since. In 2002, shortly after receiving his Masters of Divinity from the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, he and his wife, Karin, planted Highpoint Church. Together, they lead with compassion and demonstrate what it means to love people well.

Chris’s relentless passion for people and for raising up new leaders fuels his love for teaching and equipping people from numerous backgrounds at leadership seminars, Christian conferences, and in the corporate world. He can regularly be heard teaching on leadership and interviewing some of America’s top business leaders on the two podcasts he co-hosts with Karin: LoveWorks with Chris + Karin Conlee and Lead Like Jesus.

David Alexander

President and CEO, TruGreen Inc

David was born in Augusta, GA, and has lived all over the South. In 2013, he and his wife, Debbie, made Memphis their home, where David currently serves as President and CEO of TruGreen – North America’s largest lawn care provider with approximately 10,000 employees across the US and Canada. David has a BBA from East Tennessee State University.

He and Debbie have a family of fourteen: 8 children (5 of whom are in college); 2 daughters-in-law; and 2 grandchildren. David views leadership as a great stewardship opportunity. He doesn’t disciple others in order to make them more like him; he does it so that, through the process, both parties may become more like Christ.

Brent Armstrong

Vice President, TruGreen Inc

Brent was born and raised just outside Chicago in Wheaton, Illinois. He earned a BA from Wheaton College in teaching with a K-12 certificate. He currently serves as Vice President for TruGreen, with responsibilities for B to B sales and irrigation. Prior to being at TruGreen, Brent was with ServiceMaster for 25 years, beginning his career as a franchise owner and, most recently, serving as Chief Operating Officer for the Merry Maids brand, based in Memphis. When Brent and Stacey sold their ServiceMaster and Merry Maids franchises in 2001 to join the ServiceMaster home office in Memphis, little did they know that they would fall in love with the Bluff City and ultimately choose to call it home.

ServiceMaster and TruGreen have afforded Brent the privilege of learning from and being mentored by several great leaders who were living examples of integrating their faith and work. He regards LeadershipWorks as a great opportunity to be able to pass along what so many others have taken the time to model for him.

Andrew Bailey

Marketing Principal, FedEx Services

Born, raised and educated in Memphis, TN, Drew is extremely thankful for the role that education has played in his life – a value strongly supported by his grandmother who raised him.  She understood that an education could break the cycle of poverty, and she was simply elated when he graduated with both a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis.

While in college, Drew was hired by FedEx, where he has now worked for the last 16 years and is currently a Marketing Manager. He acknowledges that the cycle of poverty has been broken for his children and wants to inspire others through LeadershipWorks to break the cycle of whatever may be holding them back to reach their God-given full potential.

Karin Conlee

Women’s Ministry Director, Highpoint Church

A Navy brat who grew up on both coasts, Karin Conlee has now called Memphis home for over 25 years. Karin graduated magna cum laude from Rhodes College with a degree in Business Administration and quickly realized that the Lord would direct her skills toward ministry rather than the marketplace. Karin currently serves as the Director of Women’s Ministry at Highpoint Church – a church she and her husband planted in 2002 that has grown to over 3500 in attendance each Sunday across two campuses.

In addition to speaking, writing, and leading women, Karin invests her time in LeadershipWorks because there is no wiser investment than shaping the next generation of leaders in the city of Memphis and beyond.
